Fashion Photography 101

Like these photos? I took them for my Fashion Photography class at FIT a few summers ago not knowing a single thing about cameras except that you point and click a button. But there I was, holding a DSLR, setting up lighting equipment, and styling a model. I took this class out of a spark of interest in fashion photography after taking courses in economics (bleh) the previous summer. I decided I would take a class in something I was 100% interested and this class happened to be 7 hours long…and it was either going to be 7 hours of dread or 7 hours of fun. Thankfully, it turned out to be hours of pure fun. Other than the glitz and glam of fashion that is so appealing, I think there is something artistic and so creative in fashion editorial photos that I love and am so drawn to…not exactly sure how to explain it.

The theme of this shoot was dark romance if that wasn’t obvious. We were only allowed to stay on campus indoors, which doesn’t leave us a lot of creative space at all. Luckily, this marble looking area of the school served just fine and really captured the slightly sultry mood. I would say this is pretty good for a first time! Looking back, I don’t know how fashion photography is relevant to what I want to do now…but all I know is that if I could do it again, I definitely would. But for now, enjoy!
